MELBOURNE, FLORIDA (spacecoastdaily.com) - Supermodel, actress and former Brevard resident, Kate Upton and Detroit Tigers Pitcher Justin Verlander partnered with Wins for Warriors Foundation and the Detroit Tigers to host the third annual Grand Slam adoption event presented by Link AKC .
Upton was born in Michigan, but grew up on the Space Coast in Melbourne – and she’s a former student at Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy.
The event took place before the first pitch at the Detroit Tigers vs. Miami Marlins spring training game in Lakeland, at which Verlander pitched.
All proceeds benefitted SPCA Florida & K9s For Warriors
Along with several Detroit Tigers teammates, Upton and Verlander spent time playing with the adoptable dogs from SPCA Florida, meeting with veterans from K9s For Warriors, and took pictures with families enjoying the event.
Animal lovers, Upton and Verlander have adopted dogs of their own, and frequently visit shelters around the country.
Twenty-three dogs have already been adopted from SPCA Florida due to the awareness raised at the event.
Also, Mac, a dog that was surrendered at SPCA Florida, has been identified as a future K9s For Warriors trainee.
“Justin and I are so grateful to everyone who came out today to help raise money and awareness to find these loving dogs a forever home,” said the 2016 Space Coast Sports Hall of Fame inductee.
“I’m thrilled that we’re able to help SPCA Florida, an organization that gives shelter dogs a second chance at life, and K9s For Warriors, which honors veterans who have sacrificed so much for our country.”
The event was presented by Link AKC, and co-hosted by Verlander’s Foundation, Wins for Warriors, and the Detroit Tigers.
Additional sponsors include; Embrace Pet Insurance, Just Water, Matthew Development, Publix Charities, Watson Clinic and The Lakelander.
