Northern Ireland Children’s Cancer Fund

CARRICKFERGUS, U K (Carrickfergus Times) - A Special charity event has been held at Whitehead Golf club in aid of the Northern Ireland Children’s Cancer Fund.

The night was a combination of a very well earned birthday bash for Larne girl Michelle Peacock, who has been going through various treatments over the past five years at the Royal Hospital for sick Children and a fundraiser.

Michelle, a pupil at Downshire School, decided along with her mum and dad to do something special on her birthday that would be a way of repaying the hospital and staff for all their help: this was to raise as much money as they could.

Michelle would like to thank everyone that attended and give donations along with local businesses and family that provided prizes for ballots etc

She added: “As to date £3,500 has been raised thanks to everyone that was involved with our special night.”

Michelle is one of 20 finalists in the Pramerica Spirit of Community Awards Programme. They will be honoured at a gala awards ceremony on 27 March at The City Hotel in Londonderry with special guest John Lonergan, former Governor of Mountjoy Prison.

Downshire principal Jacqueline Stewart commented: “Michelle is writing a book to help children who also suffer from cancer and hopes to have it published soon. Proceeds from the book will go to the Northern Ireland Cancer Fund for Children. She has also raised thousands of pounds through a variety of events, including £550 from Downshire pupils who paid £1 each to wear crazy colours before half term.

“Michelle has won 500 euros and a silver medal. She goes forward to the Praemerica National finals in Londonderry later this month. Well done also to Ruth Connolly and Scott Carse who received a Certificate of Merit in the same competition for the volunteering work that they do in the local community.

Meanwhile, Michelle has been shortlisted to the last four in the Spirit of Youth section of the ‘Making a Difference’.
