Urge Secretary Zinke to protect our national monuments

Action: Wildlife Conservation

June 14, 2017   Action Alert ID# 511

Public lands are on the chopping block in the wake of President Trump’s dangerous and unprecedented executive order directing a “review” of 27 national monuments designated since 1996.

A deadline for public comment on the Bears Ears National Monument—the first one on the chopping block—collected over 69,000 comments from Earthjustice supporters urging Secretary of Interior Ryan Zinke to keep this sacred land intact and protected from industry interests. People from across the country are making their support heard for our national treasures.

Now we need your voice once again! Another 26 national monuments could be on the chopping block. Magnificent monuments, including Grand Staircase-Escalante in Utah, the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument in Hawai‘i, the Northeast Canyons and Seamounts National Monument in the Atlantic Ocean, Cascade-Siskiyou in Oregon and Maine’s Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument, seem especially threatened by special interests. These monuments are part of our national heritage—each is home to priceless treasures like vibrant biodiversity, iconic wildlife, ancient cultural sites and troves of dinosaur fossils.

The Interior Department is inviting the public to weigh in on a review of national monuments until July 10. Now is the time to push back against efforts to diminish or abolish any national monuments designated under the Antiquities Act.

The Antiquities Act is a century-old public lands law that established a legal framework for the protection of our country’s national treasures. Any attempt to reverse or shrink a monument designation by the executive branch is unlawful under the Antiquities Act. Only Congress has the authority to modify a national monument. Earthjustice stands ready to defend the Antiquities Act and the national monuments protected under the law.

Lifting federal protections would be a gift to extractive industries and politically influential players who hold sway with Trump Administration and certain members of Congress.

We cannot let special interests get in the way of the spectacular natural, archaeological and cultural features that deserve to be protected for current and future generations. Send in your comment today! To ensure your comment will be counted, please remember to mention the name of at least one monument you cherish.
