Protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge

Action: Wildlife Conservation

February 26, 2016   Action Alert ID# 342

For more than a decade, Earthjustice has been fighting in court and on Capitol Hill to protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge—a unique and unspoiled place in northern Alaska that has ecological significance for animals that depend on it, spiritual and cultural importance for the people that live in the region, and special value for all of us to enjoy. Now, we urgently need your help.

Right now, there is legislation in Congress that would designate the biological heart of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge as Wilderness. Please send a message to your senators now to support this important protection for the Refuge.

There are many reasons to protect this special place. The refuge and its biological heart, the coastal plain, is home to more than 250 animal species, including polar bears and wolverines, as well as more than 180 species of birds that migrate there each year from all 50 states. The Gwich’in people call the coastal plain the “Sacred Place Where Life Begins,” because a key part of their culture and their primary food source is the Porcupine caribou, which need the unique habitat this area provides.

The refuge is in danger, however. Even though the Arctic is ground zero for climate change, the ecologically significant coastal plain is still threatened by drilling for oil and gas. The time is now to protect the biological heart of the refuge from destructive oil and gas development.

Please urge your senators to preserve the coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge as wilderness once and for all.

The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is part of our shared natural heritage, for all to enjoy.
