California's forests are places that should be protected, but some in the California legislature have a different program in mind -- instead of protecting these important wildlife habitats, they want to offer permanent logging permits as big as 15,000 acres (more than 23 square miles) to forest landowners.
Assembly Bill 904 is set to be decided on by the Senate Natural Resources Committee before the end of June. Please take action now to tell your senator, a committee member, to vote no on this destructive bill.
The bill grants an unjustifiable, six-fold increase on current permit-size limits. And it does so without necessary wildlife and habitat protections for these forest ecosystems. A.B. 904 vastly increases the risk of damage to forests without even ensuring that state regulators or the public can adequately review logging plans. And once the permits are in place, logging can occur indefinitely -- without any public input or oversight.
Please take action now. Ask your senator to vote no on A.B. 904. Instead of expanding the size of permanent logging permits, our legislature should be fixing existing program in order to provide meaningful protections for California's forests, wildlife and waterways.
