Just two years after the largest oil spill in United States history, it appears that the federal government is about to allow drilling in America’s Arctic Ocean for the first time in decades.
The Department of the Interior has allowed Shell to prepare to drill off Alaska’s coast, despite the fact that there are insufficient safeguards in place to protect Arctic communities and wildlife. When combined with new scientific data showing that climate change has contributed to this year’s record low Arctic sea ice coverage, fragile Arctic species such as polar bears, walruses, seals and whales are now more at risk than ever before.
Sign on with WWF and tell the federal government to keep the Arctic pristine and not jeopardize our natural heritage and local communities over risky oil exploration.
